European Portuguese A2 level: skills and a four-skill roadmap

See what A2 learners can understand, say, read and write in Portugal, then diagnose each skill before choosing an official evidence route.

European Portuguese A2 is an elementary functional level for routine exchanges and simple connected descriptions. Treat it as an ability target first; a named examination or accepted document is a separate evidence question.

What A2 ability looks like

Handle personal information, shopping, housing, work, transport and familiar services. Understand short clear messages and write simple connected notes. Performance remains limited, but it is functional.

Why accepted evidence matters

AIMA states that recognised A2-or-higher evidence can prove Portuguese knowledge for permanent residence, long-term residence and nationality in specified routes. Requirements and exemptions must be checked for the individual procedure.

Prepare across skills

Use weekly listening, reading, a recorded interaction and a short text. Diagnose abilities separately and practise task formats only after building the underlying language.

Questions learners ask

Frequently asked questions

Is A2 fluent?

No. It is an elementary functional level, not unrestricted fluency.

Does every applicant need CIPLE?

No. Other recognised evidence and exemptions may apply.

Can an app certify A2?

An ordinary app cannot issue official proficiency evidence unless it is part of an authorised route.
