The planned European Portuguese curriculum

A European Portuguese curriculum should connect pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and real tasks in Portugal at every level. CEFR labels describe demonstrated ability; they are not awarded by completing a fixed number of app screens.

European Portuguese levels at a glance

A1–A2: make life in Portugal workable

Work covers identity, housing, transport, food, healthcare, employment, public services and neighbourhood interaction. Grammar enters through tasks: agreement, articles, present tense, common past reference, pronouns, questions, negation and useful prepositional contractions. Portugal-based listening remains active throughout.

B1–B2: become independent

Learners narrate, explain opinions, follow media and communicate about work, education and community life. They consolidate clitic placement, past and future meanings, the personal infinitive, the subjunctive and register. Listening widens across speakers and regions in Portugal.

C1–C2: develop precision and range

Advanced work develops professional genres, argument, idiom, humour, literature and sociolinguistic judgement. Assessment should combine reading and listening with sustained speaking, interaction and writing.

A2, CIPLE and honest certification claims

Portugal’s immigration authority states that recognised A2-or-higher evidence can support permanent residence, long-term residence and nationality processes. CAPLE administers Portuguese-as-a-foreign-language examinations, including CIPLE at A2. Requirements, accepted evidence and dates change, so learners must verify their own procedure with the current responsible authority. A future app can prepare abilities but cannot issue an official certificate.
