How to learn European Portuguese: a sustainable 12-week plan
Build a twelve-week routine balancing Portugal-based listening, pronunciation, grammar, retrieval and real interaction.
A useful study plan repeats a small set of behaviours: coherent lessons, spaced retrieval, understandable input, regular production and feedback.
Weeks 1–4: establish sound and survival language
Train stress and vowel reduction, greetings, questions, present-tense essentials and polite requests. Begin every session by retrieving earlier language without looking.
Weeks 5–8: widen daily situations
Add contractions, object pronouns, completed past events and language for housing, transport, healthcare and work. Record one minute of speech twice weekly.
Weeks 9–12: connect ideas
Practise longer listening, past-tense narratives, opinions and repair strategies. Complete one live interaction weekly, then repeat an early task at week twelve and compare evidence.
Questions learners ask
Frequently asked questions
How many minutes per day?
Twenty to forty-five focused minutes works for many adults, but consistency and task quality matter more than one total.
When should I use native media?
From the beginning, using short and appropriately supported material.
Should I study every grammar topic in twelve weeks?
No. Prioritise systems supporting your most frequent communicative tasks.
