European Portuguese object pronouns and clitic placement
Use me, te, o, a, lhe and plural forms with the before-and-after-verb placement patterns learners encounter in Portugal.
European Portuguese object pronouns can appear before or after the verb depending on sentence structure. Learn placement through high-frequency triggers and complete phrases.
Start with what the pronoun replaces
Identify direct objects before choosing o, a, os, as and indirect recipients before lhe, lhes. First- and second-person me, te, nos, vos participate in both roles by context.
Default and triggers
Affirmative main clauses in European Portuguese often favour enclisis: Vi-o. Negation, many subordinate clauses and certain adverbs attract the pronoun before the verb: Não o vi.
Practise one change at a time
Begin with an explicit noun, replace it with one pronoun, then add a trigger such as não. Leave dense combinations and future-tense mesoclisis until single placement is reliable.
Questions learners ask
Frequently asked questions
Why do apps disagree about placement?
Brazilian and European usage differ, and formality or sentence structure changes the pattern.
Must beginners use enclisis immediately?
They should recognise and progressively produce the common Portugal-based patterns.
What happens to o after certain verb endings?
Forms can change to lo/la or no/na with spelling adjustments; learn these in a later focused stage.
